Backwell Flax Bourton Cricket Club

Having recently moved to a new village, I was keen to make a contribution to the community. Given my experience leading the rebrand of Frenchay Cricket Club, I was invited to help modernise the local cricket club’s badge. Updating it for both digital platforms and traditional applications like shirts and signage.

Cricket clubs often carry deep-rooted heritage, so this project was approached with great sensitivity. Respecting the past while meeting the needs of a modern brand.

Key issues with the original badge:

  • Low-quality imagery

  • Poor balance within the shield

  • Overly complex typography

After the project's initial phase, club members were invited to vote on their preferred direction. The options included: a crisp reimagining of the existing badge, one featuring a more prominent, front-facing stag, or no change at all. Option 1 received the majority vote, leading to further refinement and eventual final sign-off.

The redesign solution included:

  • A new stag motif—refined into a strong and majestic club emblem

  • Replacement of the rose with a flax flower, better reflecting the local area

  • A reshaped shield to more comfortably contain the elements

  • Updated colour palette—honouring traditional colours while improving legibility

  • A new typographic treatment—bringing clarity and hierarchy while echoing the shield's shape

Additionally, Valhalla is proud to be sponsoring the club stumps for this season.
